Following the storms if 1836, plans to drain the Lake Haarlemmermeer near Amsterdam were made. Three steam-driven pumping stations pumped the lake dry within three years. In 1852 preparations could be made for using the new land. The other pumping stations were modernized. Cruquius became redundant. The steam-driven pumping station became a museum in 1932. It is one of the oldest examples of industrial history in the Netherlands. « less
