Truancy Sweep Nets 45 Offenders A ten year old is among those picked up Thursday for skipping school. Officers picked up 45 kids who were supposed to be in class, but doing other things. Officers went to malls, parks and neighborhoods, and homes for this first truancy sweep of the year. They cited three parents for failure to send their kids to school. One parent was cited for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The idea is to get to the bottom of why kids skip school. Mike Burns with the Pima County Attorney's Office said, "We know that when kids are not in school they could be into come kind of criminal activity, or not getting the social or economic skills they need, so we make sure to get them back to school." In fact, two kids were arrested for marijuana possession. First time truancy offenders will not be prosecuted, but repeat offenders will be arrested. « less
