LASIK surgery has changed during its brief history as a recognized and wisely-practiced technique. One of the first changes was the introduction of the excimer laser in 1988, a computer-industry tool that was applied to medical science. The excimer laser allows a LASIK surgeon to reshape the cornea by removing small amounts of corneal tissue. Another development of LASIK vision correction has been the growing popularity of Wavefront-guided LASIK. Wavefront-guided LASIK allows the LASIK eye surgeon to capture the patient’s eye’s unique “footprint” and transpose it over the laser treatment, enabling the surgeon to create a custom LASIK plan to optimize the resulting vision. The most recent development, the INTRALASE®, allows LASIK surgeons to cut the corneal flap with a laser rather than a mechanical device. « less
